Modi Indonesia Visit entered a significant phase on Tuesday as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held high-level bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta. The meeting marks an important step in strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and further advancing India’s Act East Policy.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit is focused on expanding cooperation in defence, maritime security, food security, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, space technology, digital partnerships and critical minerals. Both leaders are also expected to review progress made since President Prabowo’s visit to India earlier this year.
Defence Cooperation High on Agenda
One of the key highlights of the Modi Indonesia Visit is the growing defence partnership between the two countries. Officials are expected to discuss maritime cooperation, regional security in the Indo-Pacific and defence industrial collaboration.
According to reports, discussions may also include progress on Indonesia’s interest in India’s BrahMos missile system, although no final agreement has been officially announced.
Focus on Trade and Food Security
The bilateral talks also cover trade expansion and food security cooperation. India and Indonesia are exploring ways to strengthen supply chains, improve agricultural cooperation and enhance investment between the two countries.
Critical minerals, which are essential for electric vehicles and advanced technologies, are also expected to be an important part of the discussions.
Maritime and Indo-Pacific Cooperation
India and Indonesia share strategic interests in maintaining a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific region.
The two leaders are discussing:
- Maritime security
- Anti-piracy cooperation
- Blue Economy initiatives
- Regional stability
- Connectivity in the Indo-Pacific
These areas have become increasingly important amid changing geopolitical developments in Asia.
Part of Three-Nation Diplomatic Tour
The Modi Indonesia Visit is the first leg of Prime Minister Modi’s three-country diplomatic tour from July 6 to July 11.
After Indonesia, the Prime Minister will travel to Australia for talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before concluding the tour in New Zealand, where he will hold discussions with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The New Zealand visit will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly four decades.
Official Agenda
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the visit aims to review the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including defence, trade, healthcare, space and digital technologies.
The Modi Indonesia Visit reflects India’s growing strategic engagement with Southeast Asia under its Act East Policy. The outcomes of the bilateral talks are expected to further strengthen defence cooperation, trade, maritime security and regional partnerships between the two countries. Official statements and any agreements signed during the visit are expected after the talks conclude.
